Plant Based Products Council

The Plant Based Products Council (PBPC) is an association of like-minded organizations who are advocating for a shift toward a more circular bioeconomy through greater adoption of renewable, plant-based materials supported by appropriate end-of-life infrastructure. We educate stakeholders and advocate for programs and policies that will support growth of the plant-based products industry, helping to harness its environmental and economic potential to deliver a more sustainable future.

Plant-based products made from renewable resources present an opportunity to:

  • Meet increased consumer demand for more sustainable products and packaging
  • Address a number of environmental challenges, including climate change and our growing waste management crisis
  • Help bring quality manufacturing jobs to rural America

At this year’s Ag on the Mall, PBPC is proud to showcase the innovative, sustainable products our members are producing to create a greener tomorrow. PBPC members are leaders in the industry, and our exhibit will highlight:

  • Bio-based plastic resin from NatureWorks
  • Compostable plant-based produce bags made from Novamont’s bio-based plastics
  • Home compostable plant-based packaging made from TIPA’s bio-based plastics
  • Plant-based compostable food serviceware products from Eco-Products
  • And more!

The circular bioeconomy encourages the use of more renewable resources for energy, chemicals, and materials, and works to keep those sustainable materials and products in use longer. To grow the circular bioeconomy, PBPC encourages greater use of plant-based materials in consumer products and packaging. PBPC’s members use a wide variety of feedstocks, including inputs like agricultural residue, algae, corn, and hemp, to create a range of diverse products – everything from packaging and food serviceware to durable goods like auto parts, building materials, and textiles.

Increased adoption of the circular bioeconomy provides economic benefits for Americans – creating jobs and economic outputs for communities across the country. According to data available from USDA’s BioPreferred® Program, the plant-based products industry contributes $470 billion in U.S. economic activity and provides over 4.6 million jobs with an estimated annual average salary of $70,000. For each biobased products industry job, 1.79 more jobs are supported in other sectors of the U.S. economy.  The plant-based products industry brings jobs to small communities and contributes to quality-of-life improvements—both economically and environmentally.
