The American Seed Trade Association, one of the oldest trade associations, is excited to participate in the Celebration of Modern Ag on the National Mall in the heart of our Nation’s Capital once again. Visit ASTA’s booth to learn about the seed industry’s efforts to develop better seed to produce better crops for a better quality of life. With a membership consisting of companies of all sizes, we all share a common goal – developing better seed, giving producers more accessibility and more variety to feed a growing population in a changing climate. ASTA works on behalf of the seed industry to promote the research, development, and movement of quality seed to meet the world’s demand for food, feed, fiber, and fuel.
Take a moment to think about it – seed touches our lives every day, multiple times a day. Most of the things we enjoy in life start with seed – from the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, to the fuel that powers our cars and warms our homes. Better seed means better life, and better seed starts with plant breeding.
Plant breeding is not new - it dates back thousands of years to when people first domesticated wild plant varieties. In fact, most of the foods we eat today would not exist if it weren’t for plant breeding!
As our knowledge of plants and how they work has continued to grow over time, today we have new, more precise tools to improve crops safely and efficiently. Innovative breeding methods, like gene editing, hold tremendous potential for the future of our planet, our health, and our food.
